Video Series and Discussion
Join us in watching and discussing these six inspirational conversations about how myths hold the key to understanding human experience. These conversations, between scholar Joseph Campbell and journalist Bill Moyers, first aired on public television in 1987 and continue to fire the imagination and intellect on subjects as diverse as world religions, marriage, and pop culture.
Episode 1: The Hero’s Adventure (March 6, 2016) This class introduces Campbell and discusses hero types, hero deeds, Jesus Christ, the Buddha, movie heroes, Star Wars as a metaphor, dragons, “follow your bliss”.
Episode 2: The Message of the Myth (March 20, 2016) This class’s topics include creation myths, transcending duality, pairs of opposites, God vs. Nature, sin, morality, participation in sorrow, the Gospel of Thomas,
Episode 3: The First Storytellers (April 3, 2016) This class’s topics include animal memories, harmonization with body and life-cycle, consciousness vs. its vehicle, killing for food, initiation ritual, artists, and the Shaman.
Episode 4: Sacrifice and Bliss (April 17, 2016) This class’s topics include Chief Seattle, the sacred Earth, agricultural renewal, sacrifice of the Mass, societal dictates vs. following bliss, “hidden hands” guiding life’s work.
Episode 5: Love and the Goddess (May 1, 2016) This class’s topics include the medieval troubadours, romantic love, the Crucifixion as atonement, the story of Isis, Osiris and Horus, the mother Goddess and images of fertility.
Episode 6: Masks of Eternity (May 15, 2016) This class’s topics include identifying with the infinite, the circle as a symbol, clowns and masks, epiphanies and James Joyce, the dance of Shiva, that which is beyond words.
