2021-2022 Religious Education for
Children and Youth Curriculum
Programming begins on September 20th Watch for “A Religious Education Update from Gina Campellone” in your mailbox. Register to sign up.
Elementary Children (Pre-K – Grade 5) will use a curriculum called CartUUns, which uses animated shorts from Disney and Pixar as the basis for discussion about the values inherent in Unitarian Universalism.
Junior Youth (grades 6 – 8) will use a curriculum called D’oh, God!, which uses episodes of The Simpsons as the basis for in-depth discussions of a wide variety of religious topics. At each meeting the group views an entire episode, then engages in discussion and activities designed to encourage deep contemplation of issues.
High School Youth (grades 9 – 12) will use a variety of media, including movies and TED Talks as a vehicle for discussion of issues such as diversity, identity, privilege, sexuality, gender, faith, and more.
Our RE offerings will not be exclusively limited to the above curricula. Twice monthly we will continue to hold multi-generational worship services, primarily coordinated by Director of Religious Education, Gina Campellone & Reverend Josh, intentionally designed to include elements for kids of all ages. Once a month Gina will lead a virtual children’s chapel, an extended version of what is usually offered before the start of classes when we are in the building. Children’s chapel will include all the familiar components, such as ringing a chime, lighting a chalice, sharing joys and concerns, reading a story, and so forth. It will allow us a very valuable opportunity to come together as group and participate in a slower, less formal, more chatty worship experience.
Most programming will take place following the 10 AM service on Sunday mornings, from 11:15 to approximately noon. Junior Youth will meet at 7 PM on the first and third Sundays.
Programming begins on September 20th. Please be sure to register your child ASAP using the above link. Questions? Please contact Gina Campellone at [email protected].
Ongoing Programs will resume when possible.
- Children’s Worship usually begins each session in the chapel on the Garden Level.
- Multi-generational Worship is scheduled approximately once per month.
- Club UU Club UU is a social group for children in grades 1–5. It will meet the third Friday of each month, October – May from 6 – 8 PM to provide the children an opportunity to spend time with their UU peers outside of Sunday mornings, and to help build a sense of community. At these meetings we will share a snack, play cooperative games, and just have lots of fun!
- Music is a vital part of the Unitarian Universalist Society: East experience and we are lucky to have volunteers who direct our children’s choir. Sometimes we even have accompaniment by Reverend Josh on drums!! Children’s Choir meets September thru May, with rehearsals at 10:30 AM between services.
